Overview
Sonamarg, translating literally to 'Meadow of Gold', is a mesmerizing hill station located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. Situated at an elevation of 2,730 meters, it lies in a valley carved by the Sind River and is surrounded by imposing snowy peaks like the Sirbal Peak, Kolahoi Peak, and Machoi Peak.
Historically significant as a gateway on the ancient Silk Road connecting Kashmir with China, Sonamarg today serves as a prime base for trekkers heading to the high-altitude lakes of Vishansar, Krishansar, and Gangabal. The valley comes alive in spring with yellow crocuses that carpet the ground, justifying its golden name. It is also the starting point for the drive towards the famous Zoji La Pass leading into Ladakh.
